This crash course is a 1-day training providing Psychologists with an interest in the deaf community with a full experience on recording clinical profiles and interacting with sign language interpreters. The course will take place at Heriot-Watt Malaysia and it has a limited number of participants.

10.00 – 10.10 Participants arrive and sign the attendance list.

10.10 – 10.20 Opening of training. Presentation of project where the idea came from and how to integrate within your empowering program (Dr Maria Garraffa).

10.20 – 11.00 Clinical Psychology an introduction 1 (Dr Anna Sedda).

11.00 – 11.20 Coffee Break

11.20 – 12.00 Clinical Psychology an introduction 2 (Dr Anna Sedda).

12.00 – 12.45 Mental health and the Deaf community (Dr Nurul Akmar Abdul Aziz)

12.45 – 13.45 Lunch Break

13.45 – 14.30 Group activity. Groups of students discuss the following 2 questions:

  1. What was unexpected and what you learned from the morning talk?
  2. How does this apply to a Psychologist? For this question, students will be provided with a template in which they can record their answers for different job roles: Clinical Psychologist, Educational Psychologist and Forensic Psychologist.

A selected representative of each group reports to the audience their findings. First, unexpected aspects. Then application to Psychology. General discussion on the different perspectives and the different implications according to the field.

14.30-15.00 Training for structured clinical interview (Dr Maria Garraffa and Dr Anna Sedda)

15 – Coffee on-going during role- play sessions.

15.00 -17.00 Role-play sessions. On the day, you will be assigned to one group to practice the interaction with a professional Psychologist.

Wrap up and Q&A activity. Certificate to be awarded at the end basing on attendance– 80% of attendance mandatory to obtain certificate.
